Tanzania is well-known for its wonderful wildlife, idyllic beaches and more its greatest landmark Mount Kilimanjaro. But its nomadic people also added a unique flair that will have you learning along with your journey.

There are Indian and Arab influences in Tanzanian cooking, so toward the East of the country and mostly on the coast – hotter food is enjoyed. You can find fish pilau’s (seasoned fish and rice), chapatti (flat bread) and kabaab (kebab). More African influenced dishes are ndizi-nyama (plantain with meat) and nyama choma (grilled meat). If you make your way to Zanzibar, do stop by at the famous Luukman Restaurant. There is no menu, just what’s on special on that day. Choose from fried fish, velvety curries and fried plantain. Whatever is on special, is guaranteed to be mouth-wateringly delicious. Another hot spot that you must eat at on your travels through Tanzania is Mamboz Corner BBQ in Dar Es Salaam. Grilled chicken tossed in a unique spice combination, chicken sekela (tangy tamarind sauce mixed with chicken) is quite popular with locals. The restaurant has quite a vibe during the evenings as you watch the city around it start to slow down.

Traditional wear in Tanzania has not died out even though Western styles have become increasingly popular. You will find Tanzanian women wearing khangas (wrap). It is often brightly coloured and patterned. Not as common nowadays, but khangas used to convey messages and stories in its prints. Originating from Swahili culture, the khanga is not only used for wear. You can often find it in many homes as table clothes and hanged on the wall due to its long rectangular shape. You are also bound to see the Maasai clad in shuka (wrap) that can be worn in many ways. Maasai women can be seen wearing earrings, beads and intricate collars.

As you immerse yourself into Tanzanian life, you will find yourself inundated with the country’s attractions. There is so much to do. Start off with Lake Manyara. North of the capital Dodoma, you will find this wildlife oasis in the Lake Manyara National Park. Although smaller in size, the park is rich in diversity. You can find baboons, lions and elephant all drinking from the lake as the sun rises for another scorching day. Perhaps the highlight of your day is spotting the peculiar pink flamingos in their numbers, casually lazing the day away in the lake. It’s a marvellous sight. Consider arranging a tour of the park as you will need a four-wheel drive to travel the park. The guides will also know great spots to sight game.

The Ngorongoro crater is seven hours away from Dodoma, you should consider finding accommodation near the site or camping overnight. Walls reaching impressive heights off almost 600 metres, the crater is an impressive grassland. You can see graceful elephants, zebras and wildebeest. You may even have an opportunity to spot the elusive and endangered black rhino. If you aren’t doing a tour, you must hire a park ranger to accompany you as you explore the crater and its majestic wildlife.

Whether you’re visiting Tanzania for the wildlife inland, sandy beaches of Zanzibar or to climb Mount Kilimanjaro – you cannot deny the pure delight in the air of Tanzania. For it truly is the light of Africa.
