The Basotho are unique, even though surrounded by South Africa. African and European influences have warped together to create Basotho cuisine. Much like other African countries, starch and meat are main dishes but does differ in taste as it is less spicy. Pap (thickened maize) is also a popular dish that can be served for breakfast or even supper. An iconic dish to try out while in the country would be oxtail stew, a favourite among locals in the colder months. The novelty of Sky Restaurant over the ski slopes in Oxbow is alluring, although the food is great too. With mostly continental dishes, the Lesotho trout is something you should taste. But if you’re exploring Maseru, consider dining at the Ouh La La café. Expect French-inspired pastries, great coffee and the vibe of this popular spot.

Due to the climatic conditions, a thick blanket is worn as attire in Lesotho, often referred to as the Basotho Blanket. Both men and women, use it as a shawl in colder months. Women do wear dresses underneath it but lose the blanket in summer. While men wear trousers, button down shirts and the blanket as well. The designs of the Basotho Blanket represent heritage. There are several different prints each representing something else; such as the Seanamarena is considered royalty and the Kharetsa represents an aloe. The famous Basotho hat, called “Mokorotlo”, is a woven hat with a topknot. The hat is used across all the tribes and is often seen as a symbol of unity. Further, than that, it appears on the National Lesotho flag.
