Calabar Carnival: The Melting Point Of African Hospitality
Since it’s inception in 2004, the Calabar Carnival in Nigeria has become the melting point of African hospitality and the beginning of unity. Over 30 countries attended the 2016 edition which started at the Millennium Park, venue for the flag off of 2016 Calabar Carnival. From the amazing display of colours to beautiful music and incredible dances, the 2016 Calabar Carnival rocked in aesthetics.
It was indeed the beginning of a new dawn and growth for Africa, as the state governor, Ben Ayame had earlier said in his opening remarks. Captioned “Climate change” the carnival attracted several celebrities from within and outside Nigeria. The Calabar Carnival started in 2004 under the government of Donald Duke in an effort to grow tourism in the state. It has been celebrated annually since then amidst fanfare and colourful displays. The carnival which is reputed to be Africa’s biggest street party is in its 11th edition.
