Magical Mauritius

Mauritius is an idyllic beach destination that many tourists have a wanderlust for. It’s an island that is happy to let you rejuvenate and relax. But instead of lazing under the sun and catching a tan, go out and explore this diverse country. Its beaches are incredible, but it is a country with more than just that to offer.

Explore the underwater world of Mauritius in Blue Bay Marine Park. South of Port Louis in Mahebourg, is this protected area that allows you to snorkel through the coral and view the life underwater. It’s a popular beach area, so expect hordes of tourists as they laze on the beach. If snorkelling isn’t your thing, take a ride on a glass bottom boat to watch the marine life down below. Depending on where you’re staying on the island, you can use the public bus system which is extremely reliable. Turquoise waters and white beaches surround the marine park, so after viewing the lush underwater world, stop by a local restaurant and enjoy the sunset.

A botanical garden may not top your list of things to do when travelling through another country. A popular tourist destination, so again do expect crowds but the Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam Botanical Gardens is a visual delight. Golf buggies are on hire, but rather walk through the park and breathe in the crisp fresh air. Among all the exotic plants and flowers, the Victoria Amazonica water lilies are possibly the most intriguing sight – the strange shape and coy flowers that open one day and close the next are quite fascinating. Besides the vegetation in the park, there is a thriving ecosystem of birds, deer and tortoises.

The diversity of Mauritius is reflected in its food, with its mixture of Creole, French, Indian and Chinese ethnicities. And even more popular than its curries is its street food. Fried noodles, grilled fruit and the steaming curries stuffed into freshly baked bread are delicious. Seafood is also a big part of Mauritian cuisine, due to its location and you can find it in many dishes. Find yourself in Grand Baie, then do go to Domaine, a restaurant serving Mauritian food that makes you appreciate the homely feel of the food. They serve all the island delicacies with the usual chilli that Mauritians are accustomed too.

With the multi-ethnic groups in Mauritius, wear is dependent on ethnicity. The highest population group in Mauritius is Indians – Indian women wear sarees and men can be seen wearing kurta tops at traditional events. Creole and African people though do dress differently, often female dancers can be seen wearing sega dresses that are full-length skirts and a short blouse (often referred to as a slave dress). Try shopping at the Central Market in Port Louis, you’ll find glass souvenirs, handmade fabrics and perhaps even pick up a few bangles or a sega outfit. Although there is more produce on sale, you can find some shopping gems here.

Mauritius will lap you up in its warm waters, sense of luxury and hospitable nature. But do more than just a lazy tourist, explore all that this magical country has to offer.
